‘Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been close to death before-and survival, for her, is second nature. The Hunger Games is a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever.’

It’s taken me a while but I’ve finally read these books. I spent a lot of time avoiding them, thinking ‘oh, I don’t read YA’ and ‘if everyone is going to talk about it, I don’t want to read it.’ After all, I’ve been disappointed by other books that people talk about all the time (*ahem* FSoG).

However, a friend of mine picked up the film and we watched it together and let me tell you, I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. I’ve watched it again since!

Me being me, well I HAD to read the books after that.

The Hunger Games took me three days, reading it in the evenings and on the loo. Catching Fire too me two days. Mockingjay took my one night. As much as I hate to say it, once I started reading these books nothing else in the world existed (except my boys, obviously!) until I was done reading them. I loved them!

I loved the Katniss character, Haymitch was fantastic and even more than that, the concept of a broken world in which children are required to fight to the death for entertainment just did me in. These boys are predominantly action, but there is enough of Katniss in there (its written in the first person) to give it an emotional edge. I can certainly tell that the piece is YA, and with subject matter as dark as what Suzanne decided to cover, it may well have benefited from being written for adults. Just the same, it is written as a pace that keeps you turning the pages without overwhelming you.

The cast of characters, including the bit parts, are brilliant and with just enough of their own tales to be interesting. Without taking away from Katniss.

I’m not going to go on and on, I like these reviews to be brief, but I really do feel that these books are worth reading. Take a peep at the film if you’re not convinced, because I feel that the film did a good job of relaying the action over. Then if you’re interested in a deeper look into Katniss’ motivations and thoughts, read the book.

That said, I’m very much interested in what Catching Fire has to offer when the film releases in 2013.

Well, to start off with, I’m writing this from my phone, so I apologise now for typos, spelling errors and any chunks that just might not make sense. That’s what blogging on three hours of sleep can do to you.

My babies are here! ^_^ it took 35 hours of clenching, screaming pain followed by major abdominal surgery, but I don’t care!!! They’re here, they’re beautiful and they’re my gorgeous baby boys!

Born Sunday, May 6th @ 7am.

So… Not quite Star Wars babies and not quite birthday babies (my birthday is May 8th), but wonderful just the same.

Right, that’s all I can handle on my phone, but I’ll update again as and when I can manage. Hopefully with a but more sleep behind me.
:-)

Figured it was time for a review… not done one for a while.

So…! Mission Impossible; a franchise that is slogging on further and far longer than I ever guessed it would. I didn’t see MI3 when it came out (not sure that I’m missing a great deal but it would have made little parts of this film make a bit more sense, I suppose).

Never mind!

Movie poster for MI4Car chases, foot chases, explosions and fisticuffs… if this is what makes your movie, then this is pretty much perfect for you.

I have to admit, almost despite myself, that I really enjoyed the film. But that’s mainly because this is exactly what I like. Lots of action sequences, fancy cars, chases, fast cuts and minimal plot. Not to say it didn’t have plot, but it was simple and, frankly put, when the decision to go to the cinema is a spur of the moment decision made because I’m getting snowed on, then I think we did pretty well out of it.

Its quite simple; a mission to pull some files from the Kremlin gets massively botched and leads to Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) team getting disavowed. Not only that, but if they screw up any more, they’re going to end up branded as terrorists. Worse still, they still have to stop a crazed nuclear bomber from destroying the world by pitting Russia against USA. Dun duhn duuuuuuuh!

Yeah… so off they go to fix it.

Dave made the very good point of saying that the film should just be called: Possible. Because in the end, of course, it is. That’s not a spoiler, but just what you’d expect. I mean think about it, would you really go to see Mission Impossible and expect them not to save the day? So I think that’s the only fall down point for me; some of the magic is gone. You know they’re going to fix everything… you’re just not entirely sure of how.

Still that chick in the green dress is smokin’ hot, so if you’re into eye candy there’s both her and Tom Cruise to keep you entertained. Though I still maintain that he must have been wearing something in his heels; its well known that he’s a short ass. How, therefore, was he still as tall as his female lead while she was strutting around in three inch heels? *snerk*

Oh and Simon Pegg is ace. ^_^

Book Review: Assassin

Author: Shaun Hutson
Title: Assassin
Genre: Horror
ISBN: 9780751501971
‘Until now, Frank Harrison had ruled gangland but it looked as if that reign was about to end in blood..’

I’ve talked about this book before but I didn’t go into masses of detail. Now I have the chance to and I’d like to express my love eternal for this author and his mastery of all things gross and minging.

I’m not a squeamish person, not by a long shot, but as I read this book during my lunch hours, there were instances when I had to stop chewing. …just in case. More clinical, perhaps, than some of his later work, but part of the reason I like it here is because the cold, factual nature of death (in his descriptions) perfectly matches the chilled, calculating detachment of some of the primary characters.

Its a book rammed full of bad guys and very few good guys. I love the fact that the bad guys are taught a firm (if exceptionally bloody and painful) lesson, even though two (by my count) seem to get away scot free (aside from serious physiological issues). Even the good guy(s?) suffer a little, as if to make sure that the message is loud and clear; life can be hard, its often shit; you have to just keep on truckin.’

I love reading about Frank Harrison and Ray Carter. They are different enough that my emotions have range, but similar enough that I can (almost) wag my finger in a I-told-you-so fashion when things start to go wrong. No spoilers from me, but I do enjoy a sense that Shaun, in his own violently icky way, is reminding us that crime doesn’t pay. For anybody.

Incidentally, this is is an early piece of his work and I really can see (in some of my older scrawlings), where I tried to ape his style. Certainly not so obvious any more (his writing has matured, mine certainly has and I write very different stories now) but I feel kinda warmed that I was able to catch some of his ick in my work. ^_^

I hesitated, at first, at doing a ‘looking back over the year’ sort of post. Then I realised that its important for me to sit back for a second and realise that what I have done is actually significant. Or at least that it should be to me. In my mind, I’ve focused a fair amount on what I haven’t done which is terribly detrimental to- well everything!.

There are plenty of things that I managed to do in 2011 that, 365 days ago, I never would have imagined I could do. I could hope for them maybe, but to reach this far and realise I’ve done all these things is almost more than my brain can cope with.

I’m not going to go through everything I’ve done, but won’t hurt to list a few of the things here. In fact I think it will be a good post for me to come back to in later months when I need a morale boost.

Post A Week
Web badge: post a weekThis was an initiative run by WordPress actually; encouraging bloggers to write at least one post a week. There was a Post A Day initiative, but even I’m not crazy enough to give that a go; I’d simply never manage it. But the idea of posting something every week, especially at the beginning when I was barely sure the blog was a good idea, was daunting to say the least. But not only did I manage it, but I posted sometimes in excess of a single entry each week. Better yet, while doing so, I managed to gather for myself a clearer idea of what this blog is for and what its about. A good few steps away from where I began in October 2010 eh?

Submission For Anthology
This is part of what brought my enjoyment of erotica back to me. Mitzi Szereto, author of erotic and multi-genre fiction is putting together an anthology named Thrones of Desire: Erotic Tales of Swords, Mist And Fire. I found talk about it on my Facebook account and this was the very first time I had considered that I may, possibly, perhaps, maybe be good enough to submit anything. At this stage its still too soon to know if I’ve been successful or not, but part of me doesn’t care. Obviously I would LOVE to be part of this anthology, but the act of submitting anything at all is a very big step for me. Taking the plunge and acknowledging the fact that I feel I’m good enough to be considered. Woo.

Alt Fiction
What an awesome day. I only went to one unfortunately; too busy to do both, but it was the single most incredible event linked to writing so far. I’m not exaggerating. I didn’t get signed or anything like that, but I went to a place on my own, a place filled with writers who are in the same boat as me. And not only did I go and have a ball, but I learned so much about what I want to do and that I CAN actually do it. I know I keep banging on about the event, but its really important to me. I can’t wait for this year.

Growing Twitter/Blog Followers Base
TwitterWhen this blog began I didn’t think anyone would read it. Hell I wasn’t even sure I’d keep doing it. But this year – I wish I knew how – blog followers has leapt to 26 (four of those in the last fortnight), while Twitter followers has rocketed to 253! Now for those of you with scores of followers, on either medium, that may not seem like much to you. But I’m just one woman, sitting in a dark room spitting out my thoughts for the world. The idea that anybody is interested enough to follow those thoughts, through a Twitter feed or through email is just incredible! And I would like to thank everyone following me right now. In any form. Your interest is very warming and does keep me going on those days when I just can’t be bothered.

Pregnancy
Yeah. If you don’t know by now, then pay attention, huh? I am thoroughly pregnant (almost 20 weeks in fact) and with identical twins. I don’t know if achievement is the right word, as its certainly not something I was gunning for, but its an incredible thing to have happened to me. Some days I still can’t believe it…! Then I look down at my stomach and think ‘fuck, if I’m not pregnant, then I’m getting bloody FAT!’

Publisher For Clash Of The Animal Kings
Yes… yes… I know. I’ve kept this very, very quiet. I couldn’t help it. I was going through that whole ‘to good to be true’ kinda panic and wanting to make sure I had all my gubbins together and my head straight before I started talking about it here. Yes. Its true. I have found a publisher for Clash Of The Animal Kings and I am ABSOLUTELY THRILLED! I am so happy, in fact, that its probably best that I leave the update with regards to this for tomorrow, so I can talk about it in a bit more detail.
Heh, teasers. I know.
See you tomorrow! :p
